Why the scholars open their books with the hadith of intention — and three practical lessons from it.

Innamal a'malu bin niyyat — deeds are but by their intentions.

Imam Bukhari opened his Sahih with this hadith. Three lessons:

1. A small deed becomes great with the right intention.

2. A great deed can become hollow without one.

3. Renew your intention in the middle of the deed, not only at the start.
