Traces of Islam in the Nusantara: From the Coast Inland
Artikel oleh Ust. Bagus Prasetyo · 12 Juli 2026
Islam reached the archipelago through trade, preaching, and culture — the story of its three waves.
Islam did not arrive in the Nusantara by the sword, but by trading ships, good character, and the arts.
Three great waves:
1. Arab and Gujarati merchants along the coasts (7th–13th century).
2. Saints and scholars building pesantren (14th–16th century).
3. Sultanates making Islam the culture of the court (16th–18th century).
The legacy is still with us: from wayang breathing tawhid to the pesantren tradition.
